Journey – the famous band that brought such hits as Open Arms, Faithfully and Don’t Stop Believing – will be coming to the Philippine shores. Well, it’s no surprise that Journey would opt to come to the Philippines. After all, it’s newest lead vocalist is none other than Filipino singer-songwriter Arnel Pineda.

For those who don’t know – Arnel Pineda had a singing career with show bands around the Philippines, belting out covers of songs by the likes of Aerosmith, Survivor, Air Supply, Kenny Loggins and of course – Journey. Arnel Pineda sang these songs with a band called The Zoo. Apparently, some of the videos of The Zoo doing covers of these 70’s and 80’s popular bands began appearing in You Tube. Eventually, Neal Schon, the guitarist of Journey, was very impressed with Arnel Pineda – his vocal range and his uncanny ability to sound so close to Journey’s former singer Steve Perry. Neal Schon contacted Noel Gomez, a close friend of Arnel Pineda who put up the videos, got the contact information of Arnel Pineda, and then invited Arnel Pineda via e-mail to audition for Journey.

At first, Arnel Pineda thought that it was a hoax, but when Neal Schon finally made the phone call, and a few days later, Arnel Pineda went off to San Francisco for a two-day audition. On December 2007, it was announced all over that Journey had a new singer and the news was even featured by CNN.

On February 2008, Arnel Pineda debuted as the singer of Journey, and performed at the Viña del Mar International Song Festival. Needless to say, Arnel Pineda became a big hit!

Since then, Journey has recorded a new album called Revelation with Arnel Pineda doing the vocals. There are a lot of old Journey classics in the album, but this time with Arnel Pineda‘s voice taking over what once used to be Steve Perry‘s unmistakable sound. The album debuted at No. 5 in the Billboard Top 200 Charts and has been in the Top 20 for over 6 weeks.

Of course, the success of the album plus the awesome reception at live gigs has reinvigorated Journey, and already plans are being drawn up to include a Revelation Tour to promote the album. Journey is currently touring with Heart and Cheap Trick, and has performed in Germany, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and in various cities across the United States. That tour kicked off on June 2008 and will continue on until October 2008. Towards the end of 2008, Journey will be expected to tour Japan, Australia, and – most certainly – the Philippines!

Information about all the Journey tour dates, including the schedule for the Journey concert in the Philippines is available at the Journey homepage.

To our kababayan Arnel Pineda – We are very proud and happy for your blessings and success. Good luck on your Journey. Literally.

Incidentally, Journey Concert Tickets are available here.

  1. This is great news. I’m sure Arnel will show the old Journey boys a good time back in our home town.

  2. Belen Leon-guerrero Says:

Wow!!! I think one day concert is not enought.

  3. Oh wow, that is awesome I am so there!

  4. dude i do not see any tickets on their Philippines / Manila concert. Is there already a confirmed date when they’ll be coming to Manila?

  5. wow!! my fellow filipinos there do not know what is coming thier way when this concert comes to manila (is there large enough venue to accomodate the attendies??). i just watch journey’s concert in concord (ca) last sept 24. wih heart and cheap trick….concert lasted for four hours (7:10pm to 11:15pm) of unadulterated rock music!

when journey performed, the sold out venue of 15 thousand, they were on thier feet from the begining up to journey’s encore. arnel singing abilities and journey’s perenial rock music got us singing, dancing, clapping and waving our hands and shouting with delight. arnel is like a perpetual motion device that does not get tired doing his thing on stage.
he spins, jumps, slide, runs, and sometimes throwing the mic stand in the air and catching it..these were done while singing and never missing any note or cue. he took journey’s performance to another level and it also radiates to his band members they were rocking more, dean castronovo (drummer) was so amazingly insane on his drums and neil schon almost
melted that les paul guitar with his licks, ross valorie is so soulful with his
base guitar and jonathan cain fantastically played that piano like he invented it!!

it was totally insane and i couldn’t believed a 40 yr old man can sustain that much energy and singing in high voice with robust and intesnity for the entire concert. the sold out venue went crazy and shouting for more!
some arms, fairfully, don’t stop believing, seperate ways, lights..the whole crowd were singing with him and it’s beautiful to see him getting the crowd involved all the way!

i would never thought that i would see a major rock icon band in concert having a filipino lead singer (and performed great and incredibly accepted by the the audiences with delight) in my lifetime. arnel is the “biggest
    small guy on stage”!!!

to all kababayans out there…journey is back with thier new supersonic ship named “arnel pineda” and get the ride of your lifetime..i just did and it was insanely awesome experienced!!!!!!!

    the golden state!!!

  6. JuLio Banderas Says:

Mr. Obet, kindly exert some effort to think because you cannot seem to imagine if there is a venue large enough to accomodate the crowd for a Journey concert is downright dumb and very lame.

Michael Jackson performed in Manila for a 40,000-strong crowd. The Apo Hiking Society solo concert last month had 25,000 souls.

  7. JuLio Banderas Says:

Pardon the wrong grammar. My post was done in haste as I am shocked how ignorant a Filipino can get, not knowing what his country can handle.

  8. to Julio Danderas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

well, well, well what do we have here i am not here to argue about my
satirical comment regarding the venue,,i am fully aware about the mj conert and what have you over there. mine is just a joke which to your taste is not fully digestable. you come after me in a very distasteful manner hahahaha you refer to me as dumb, lame and ignorant without
even thinking that i, in “reference to the venue is just to highlight the
possible number of people welcoming a filipino artist” and not to be little
my country in any manner. but i am not going any further seems you have such a very narrow faculty that continuing is futile.

your downright accusations and distasteful coments on me just reflects
more of your personality and mindset than my goodfaith reference to the venue..

piece of advice julio..grow up young and not grumpy LOL!!!!

  9. julio the way end of discussions for i see no further reasons to
engage any more of your appaling response because i already sense
your wayward directions of arguments from the get-go!!

  10. Aruki Ichi Says:

Well – Finally – Has it been confirmed? when? where? Thanks… Hope is not just mere gossip (chismis) pero sigurado na naman! Please reply and let us know…

  13. they are really amazing to watch – watched one of thier concerts here in the u.s. with heart and cheap trick and will surely watch them again when ever they come back in northern california. i’m sure being journey’s first time in the phils they will be more surprised to know how well their music is apprciated by filipinos, much more having a filipno front man, journey just tap open the asian markets (china, japan, korea, singapore..) more in thier favor.

is this concert just for one day/one venue event or there will be other places/dates to follow in the philippines aside from mall of asia

we’ll be visiting the county this coming march to april, too bad for us we just missed the concert date by a week or we will surely going yo watch them again and of course we will wear their journey concert tour shirt i bought here in california.
